The town of Waxhaw is approximately 21 miles south of Uptown Charlotte. The famous Southpark Mall is located only 16 miles from this small town. This area was home to a struggling group of farmers until the railroad made it to this area. The railroad brought the chance at a larger market for their crops and the local economy improved immensely. The town grew slowly and steadily until the first gold found in the US, was found in this area and the Howie Gold Mine is right outside the city limits. Though gold is no longer a big economic factor in the town, it gave a much needed boost to the population and economy during those times.
