Unlike many other North Carolina communities which had already been in existence when the railroad made it to them, Mooresville was created because of the railroad which needed to place some cotton weighing scales. The area they wanted to place them in was owned on a Plantation owned by Franklin Moore. Moore donated land for the weighing station, and enough for a depot as well as land for several people to place homes upon. Hence the town was born.
