The community of Cornelius Is located about 20 miles directly north of Uptown Charlotte. This small town is located directly beside Interstate 77 which makes the short trip to Charlotte seem even shorter. Cornelius began as a cotton trading marketplace for the surrounding area and as this pretty area grew, it developed into mill town where textiles were produced with the cotton grown. The town of Cornelius owes its’ name to one of the main financial backers of the cotton mill, J.B. Cornelius and the town was subsequently named after him by the thankful citizens. The heyday of mill towns has long since passed and Cornelius moved right along with the times. However it still honors it’s heritage and preserves historic buildings and sites.

When the Catawaba River was dammed, Lake Norman was created and Cornelius and it’s growth, took another direction entirely from farming and cotton and textiles. Its economy got a boost in the form of a hydro-electric plant providing power for the area, and of course visitors to the crystal clear and enormous Lake Norman at Cornelius.
