Belmont Real Estate and Homes - History

The earliest settlements on the territory that is now known as Belmont can be traced back in the mid-1700s.  During that time, there were territory disputes between the Native-American Cherokee Indians and the Dutch settlers. The settlers built a fort at a strategic location near the Catawba River and the South Fork River.  Since then, much of the development in Belmont has been caused by commercial growth, such as the establishment of textile mills, small stores, and railway stations.  In the 1870s, Roman Catholic missionaries founded a community and school, contributing greatly to the development of the city.

Approximately 20 years after the establishment of the religious community, Belmont was declared by the North Carolina General Assembly as an official town. Throughout much of the 1900s, Belmont was known for having a strong textile industry, which contributed largely to the development of the area.  From a population of nearly 150 in 1900, the population grew to nearly 4,000 in 1930. In 2000, the census on Belmont recorded a population of just over 8,700.  Although the textile industry in the city has declined in the 1990s and 2000s, the emergence of other businesses and industries has fueled growth in the area. As of July 2007, the population in Belmont was recorded at over 9,200.
