Lake Wylie Real Estate and Homes - History
Lake Wylie holds the title as the oldest lake along the Catawba River. The lake was constructed in 1904 by the Catawba Power Company. The Catawba Power Company was organized by Dr. Gill Wylie, the same man who thought up the idea of damming the Catawba River and creating the lake. As a child, Wylie grew up in an area just off of the river and, at the time, the river was all but impassable at the time. After entering into the Confederate Army at the tender age of 16, Wylie went on to study in New York.
It was while Wylie studied in New York that he would be flung into the rising industry of energy and electricity. When he learned about how dams were being constructed to produce energy for nearby towns and cities, his thoughts drifted back to the Catawba River in the Carolinas. He developed his own plan to create a hydroelectric dam in South Carolina's Rock River. The dam was completed and it was used to power downtown Anderson, South Carolina. In 1900, Gill and his brother would establish the Catawba Power Company and begin working on a dam along the Catawba River, near India Hook, South Carolina. The damming of the Catawba River created the Catawba Lake.
In 1905, Wylie would get the help of James Buchanan Duke, who would help him finance the Southern Power Company. Approximately twenty years later, the Southern Power Company would replace the old dam with the Catawba Hydroelectric Station, which would increase Lake Catawba's size to 54 square kilometers. The Southern Power Company merged with Duke Power Company in 1927, and the company has built numerous dams and lakes along the Catawba River and other rivers in the Carolinas. In 1960, the Catawba Hydroelectric Station was renamed the Wylie Hydroelectric Station and the Catawba Lake was renamed Lake Wylie. Since then, the area around the lake has continued to develop into one of the most attractive places to live in America.
